Our Story

The Focolare Movement is described as “a large and varied family, of a new people born of the Gospel.” Founded in Trent, Italy in 1943 during the Second World War, this spiritual and social renewal movement — officially called the Work of Mary — gained Catholic Church approval in 1962.

The Focolare Movement now operates across 182 nations with approximately 2 million participants. Its core mission emphasises spreading the message of unity worldwide, drawing inspiration from Jesus’ prayer: “May they all be one” (John 17:21).

The movement’s objectives centre on fostering brotherhood and building fraternal relationships across individuals, cultures, and all sectors of society — transcending religious, cultural, and national boundaries.

In Uganda, the Focolare Movement inspires and supports the work of NASSO — Namugongo Social Services Organisation — bringing these values of unity and mutual care into practical community development programmes.

Our Activities

The Focolare community in Uganda gathers regularly for spiritual growth, formation, and community outreach rooted in the values of unity and the Gospel.

Annual Updating Meeting

Every year, zonal delegates return from the International Centre to share the year's theme and plan accordingly. These annual updating meetings help members stay connected to the global movement while contextualising its spirit within the Ugandan community.

Focolare Activities

Apostolate in Schools

Youth from various schools practice Gospel principles and invite their peers to share their experiences of living the Focolare charism. This outreach brings the movement's spirit of unity and mutual care into educational institutions across Uganda.

Focolare & NASSO Uganda

NASSO — Namugongo Social Services Organisation — was founded and continues to operate under the inspiration of the Focolare Movement. The movement's central charism of unity is the spiritual engine behind every programme NASSO delivers: from the Zia Angelina Health Centre III to the Arcobaleno Nutrition & ECD Centre and our Socio-Economic Development initiatives.

The Focolare members in Uganda form a community of faith and action, providing spiritual support to NASSO's staff and volunteers, and embodying the belief that when people are united in love, lasting social transformation becomes possible.
