This Project is implemented by Arcobaleno Nutrition Centre and Nursery School to support vulnerable children and promote their holistic development through access to education, nutrition, healthcare and family support in Namugongo and surrounding areas. The project has been implemented since 2011, with support from SAD – Adoption from a Distance, through the New Families initiative in Italy and of recent years the support has been supplemented by AMU for Kids from AMU-Luxemburg and PROSPES- Italy has provided IT support for the children and staff. The project supports 45 children every year in the nursery education and currently the project is supporting 147 children and since 2011, the project has supported over 1000 children in the education and nutrition support.
The project was established in response to the challenges faced by vulnerable families who struggle to meet the basic educational, nutritional and social needs of their children. It seeks to ensure that children from disadvantaged households have an opportunity to grow, learn and develop in a safe and supportive environment.
i. Early Childhood Development and Education
A major component of the project is the provision of Early Childhood Development (ECD) and nursery education to vulnerable children, particularly those between 3 and 5 years of age. The programme prepares children for entry into primary education by developing their foundational academic, social, emotional and practical skills.
Children participate in age-appropriate learning activities that promote language development, numeracy, creativity, communication, social interaction and physical development. The school environment also provides children with opportunities to develop confidence, discipline and positive relationships with their peers and teachers.
ii. Nutrition Support
The project integrates education with nutrition support, recognizing that adequate nutrition is essential for children’s growth, health and ability to learn effectively. Vulnerable children receive appropriate meals and nutritional support while attending the Centre.
The nutrition component which is mainly done in the nursery section helps address food insecurity among beneficiary families and contributes to improved health, concentration and participation in learning activities. Where necessary, children with health or nutritional concerns can also be linked to appropriate healthcare services.
iii. Support for Children in Primary and Secondary Education
The project goes beyond nursery education by continuing to support vulnerable children as they progress through primary and secondary education. This approach helps reduce the risk of children dropping out of school because of their families’ inability to meet educational expenses.
Support may include assistance with school-related requirements and other essential needs, enabling beneficiaries to remain in school and continue their education. The project therefore provides continuity of support during the different stages of a child’s educational development.
iv. Holistic Child Development
Arcobaleno’s approach goes beyond academic education by addressing the broader needs of the child. Beneficiaries are supported to develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually.
The project provides a safe and caring environment where children can interact, participate in recreational activities and develop important life skills. Teachers and caregivers also work with families to understand children’s needs and encourage positive parenting and child development practices.
v. Family and Caregiver Engagement
The project recognizes that sustainable improvement in children’s welfare requires the involvement of parents and caregivers. Families of beneficiary children are therefore encouraged to participate in activities related to children’s education, nutrition, health and general well-being.
Through engagement with parents and caregivers, the Centre is able to identify challenges affecting children’s attendance, development and welfare and provide appropriate guidance or referrals where necessary.
vi. Contribution of SAD – Adoption from a Distance
The support provided through SAD – Adoption from a Distance under the New Families initiative in Italy has been instrumental in enabling Arcobaleno to continue supporting vulnerable children over the years. The long-term partnership has provided an opportunity for children from disadvantaged families to access education and essential support that might otherwise be beyond their families’ means.
The partnership reflects a commitment to solidarity and international cooperation in promoting the rights, dignity and development of vulnerable children.
Overall Contribution of the Project
Since its establishment in 2011, the Arcobaleno Nutrition Centre and Nursery School Project has made an important contribution to improving the lives of vulnerable children and their families. By combining early childhood education, nutrition, healthcare support and continued educational assistance through primary and secondary school, the project addresses several interconnected factors that affect children’s development and educational outcomes.
The project has also helped create a foundation for children to progress through the education system with greater confidence and stability. Through the continued support of SAD, supplemented by AMU-Luxemburg and the commitment of Arcobaleno staff, the project remains an important intervention in promoting education, nutrition, child protection and holistic development among vulnerable children.
